Science Day 2019
Wow!!! What a day we had, as all the pupils from Kilbeg N.S. turned into Pathologists for the day. Yes those busy little ‘disease detectives’ started off their day trying to decide if Polio, Tonsillitis, Bronchitis, Scarlet Fever and Alice in Wonderland Syndrome were really real.
Next, how will we keep those germs at bay? Is hand washing really effective? Let’s see what you think of our simple experiment. We ‘Infected’ five children out of a class of 21 with ‘germs’ on their hands (red glitter) and asked them to shake all of their classmates hands………. See what happened for yourself.
Did you know, when we sneeze, each sneeze can travel up to 100mph, taking microbes far away from us and maybe landing on someone else.
How important is calcium? Over the next week we will observe what happens to these bones (they’re soaking in vinegar at the moment) and what effect will acid have on our teeth.
The anatomy laboratory was very interesting. Here we questioned, observed, predicted, analysed, problem solved, worked collaboratively and had some fun along the way.
In our groups we predicted the names for all the body organs we were given, then we checked our answers (the oesophagus and pancreas were the trickiest).
Next we placed the organs where we thought they should go, and the results were really good. We discussed it again made one or two minor adjustments and then the body was complete.
The afternoon brought lots more fun with designing and making. As part of designing and making in science we had to explore, plan, make and evaluate.
Junior/Senior Infants and First/Second made some boats using marla and tinfoil. The boat that could hold the most peas was the winner. Junior and Senior Infants were given some help from Fifth/Sixth class but First/Second had to do it all on their own.
It was a tight competition with two boats holding more than 50 peas! But unfortunately some of the boats sank!
Third/Fourth and Fifth/Sixth class had to design and make some catapults. Every one of these unique designs worked…..we’ll be back tomorrow to see whose missile could travel the furthest.
Well done to everyone on working so hard for Science Day. Who knows maybe we’ll have a few children from Kilbeg studying Pathology over the next few years.
