5th and 6th Class Suggested Work Week 20th April – May 1st

Hello everyone,

I hope you’ve all enjoyed the two week break from work over the Easter holidays especially as the weather was so lovely. No doubt you’ve all  been busy in the garden and getting lots of fresh air. I hope all of your families are keeping well.
I will outline the work for the next two weeks here. Try to attempt and complete as much as you can. I have also included some extra information to help you in English, Maths and Irish as attachments with this email.

Gaeilge:
We will be continuing with the topic ‘An Aimsir’
Pg. 114: read the story and answer the questions on page 115
Pg. 116: read the comhrá and then complete part (E)
Pg. 118 going back over the verbs and page 119 (I)
Pg. 121 look at the plan and read the poem ‘An sneachta’ and then write your own poem about ‘An bháisteach’ using the ideas on that page

English:
SNIP literacy sessions 21 and 22
Continue reading : library books, comics, extracts from newspapers, recipes
Starlight 11b – ‘The Painting’
Use your dictionary to look up any of the following words that you don’t understand,  they will help with the exercises that follow the story –
austere, clustered, melancholy, towered, mirage, tilted, swell, impending, tentatively, animatedly
Before reading the story, look at the title, and the pictures and predict what the story will be about. Then read the story and as you read, stop after every paragraph and check that you understand everything you’ve read. Then read the questions and then read the story again.
I would like you to complete parts A,B,C,D and E. For C and D you can just write the word as the answer.
For week 2,  I would like you to write a story on ‘A Stolen Painting’. I have included some notes for this in the attachments and also use page 127 (G) and page 133 (F and G) to help you.

Maths:
Complete the next two weeks of Mental Maths and the Friday Test
Some additional help for Directed Numbers and Length is in the attachments and please read all of the examples in the book too.

6th class: Directed Numbers pg. 120, 121, 122, 123 q. 1 and 2 parts a,b,c,d and e and q. 4 (the answers can be recorded in the book where possible)
Length: pg. 85 q. 3 and 4 (a,b and c), pg. 86 q. 1, 2 and 5 parts a,b,and c

5th class: pages 125, 126, 127 and 128 and on length: pg. 94 q. 2, pg. 95 q. 1 ( the answers can be recorded in the book where possible)
(a and c), q. 3 (a and b), q. 7 and 8 parts c and d

Science: Unit 15: Seeing is Believing
Read pages 84, 85 and 86 and then draw a labelled diagram of the eye like the one on page 84. In your own words see if you can describe the function of the sclera, cornea, iris, pupil, lens, retina and optic nerve. Think of a few things that a blind person would need to use every day in school (remember the programme we watched at the beginning of the school year about Michael from Kerry.

The School Hub on TV is very well done and has lots of interesting science experiments.

Remember you only have to complete what you’re able to do and always get in some daily exercise and help at home. You might like to try some sketching, maybe a still life of a bowl of fruit or sketch someone playing outside.

Best wishes,
Carmel Thorpe
